Pierluigi Freni, Project Manager at AGATE Sensors, shared with us the company’s strengths and the reasons that make it one of the most interesting companies in the LIFTT portfolio.

Deep Tech, innovation, scalability: AGATE seems to have many strings to its bow…
“That’s right,” confirms Pierluigi, “and another strength is undoubtedly the quality and complementarity of the team, reinforced by the arrival of a manager with significant industrial experience in the production conversion of advanced technologies for the semiconductor and electronics sector. This figure has helped to consolidate the group’s executive capacity, combining a solid scientific base with concrete development and industrialization skills: a mix that allows the company to transform academic research and innovation into high value-added products.”

“The company,” continues the PM, “is an expression of the Finnish technological ecosystem that rose from the ashes of the giant Nokia: today, this country is a European hub of innovation, integrating deep tech, AI, and sustainability. AGATE was founded as a spin-off of Aalto University, one of Europe’s leading technological universities, which is also a shareholder. This background represents a decisive competitive advantage: the Finnish context is characterized by close collaboration between universities, research centers, and businesses, favoring the growth of deep tech startups. LIFTT has already gained experience in this country through other investee companies, such as Comptek Solutions, and recognizes Finland as fertile ground for the development of emerging and next-generation technologies.”

When did LIFTT identify AGATE as a high-potential prospect?
The collaboration between LIFTT and AGATE began before the summer and has already produced concrete results. The team has demonstrated solidity and reliability, adhering to the established executive plan. LIFTT has appointed Matti Hellgrén as its representative on the Board: already chairman of Comptek, with a background at Nokia and Microsoft, Hellgrén is a highly experienced and prominent figure in the Finnish industrial landscape, able to provide strategic support and facilitate connections with the local manufacturing sector.

What are the potential applications of AGATE technology?
“On a technological level,” replies the PM, “AGATE is developing a unique proprietary technology with wide applicability in various sectors. Although still in the early stages of industrialization, the company has already attracted the interest of numerous potential customers, both in the consumer electronics market, particularly for wearable devices, and in more strategic sectors such as defense and advanced industry. The early interest of the market testifies to the high level of innovation and the practicality of the solutions developed.

In short,” Pierluigi concludes, “the company represents excellence in the European innovation landscape: a high-profile team, cutting-edge technology, a favorable ecosystem, and a clear vision for industrial growth. LIFTT’s investment is not only a support for a promising company but also a further step in building an international network of deep tech expertise capable of generating long-term value.”
